If you're seeing a duplicate of almost the same transaction in your account when there should only be one, we promise extra money is not being taken out of your account AND we have a solution.
Let's start with what might be causing this issue:
Most credit card transactions and some bank account transactions first show up as pending, and then become posted. If your bank shares the posted transaction before the pending transaction is deleted, then the platform cannot reliably tell that the two are the same, and so we have to report them as two different transactions (after all, we don't want to incorrectly fail to report a real transaction!).
Eventually the pending one is deleted, so the total number of transactions is correct.
What does this look like for you?
First way:You may see duplicate transactions for a short period. The timeline will be something like:
The day after you make the transaction, it shows up, and you approve it. Maybe you categorize it and add a receipt. This is normal.
A few days later, a nearly identical transaction shows up again (π).
The date will be slightly different, and the amount or vendor name may have changed slightly (the amount would only change if this was something like a tipped transactions). It will not have your previous categorization or receipt attached to it. If you look back, they will see that the first transaction still exists.
A day or two after that, the first transaction will disappear. If you had a receipt attached only to that transaction, it will no longer be accessible from inside the app.
You will need to have separately attached it to the second transaction in order to continuing accessing it.
Second way: If the you go many days in between categorizing transactions, then the timeline might looks something like:
The day after they make the transaction, it shows up, and you approve it. Maybe you categorize it and add a receipt.
The next time you review transactions, you see the same transaction again (the date will likely be slightly different, and the vendor name or amount may have changed slightly, for the same reasons as the previous scenario. But it will be clearly the same transaction.) The transaction appears to have lost their previous categorization info/receipt. The version of the transaction that you already reviewed is no longer visible anywhere in the app
How we can fix this:
If there is a duplicate, then it will eventually disappear, so this will not corrupt your data long-term.
If you want to get the duplicate transaction out of your data sooner, then you can tag the original transaction as "Other / Personal" (note: that you should do this to the first transaction, not the second, as it is always the earlier transaction that will eventually disappear)
You should still apply the correct Category/Product tag to the second transaction - even if you already did this to the first - as this is the one that will persist.
If you want a receipt attached to this transaction, you do need to re-upload it to the second transaction.
Getting your receipt back
If you threw away the receipt after uploading it to the first transaction, the file may still be on their phone, and they may be able to upload it it anyway.
If the photo is not still on your phone, but the first transaction is still visible, then they can download it from that transaction and then re-upload it to the new one.
If they have lost access to the receipt, and the original transaction is not still visible, let us know at [email protected] and we can work out magic to get this image for you.
